It is one of the largest Sphagnum growing sites in the Baltics, where Canadian \u2018moss layer transfer technique\u2019 and German experience in Sphagnum farming were applied aiming at the restoration of raised bog ecosystems. The work was done by the initiative of NGO Lithuanian Fund for Nature within the framework of LIFE project LIFE Peat Restore and in close cooperation with JSC Klasmann-Deilmann \u0160ilut\u0117.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/70276582-10156777676328246-6281330464275824640-o-1920x1080-1920x1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/70276582-10156777676328246-6281330464275824640-o-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/70276582-10156777676328246-6281330464275824640-o-1920x1080-556x313.jpg 556w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/70276582-10156777676328246-6281330464275824640-o-1920x1080-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparatory work for <em>Sphagnum<\/em> planting took more than three years. It included thorough analyses of the ecological conditions at the site (peat and irrigation water properties, water hydrological regime) and possibilities to ensure proper water level in <em>Sphagnum<\/em> growing fields. Contributions were made by the experts of the <em>Greifswald Mire Centre<\/em> visiting German sites, where Sphagnum farming is implemented (Hankhausen Moor), and by the scientists of the <em>Nature Research Centre (Lithuania)<\/em>, who completed the first <em>Sphagnum<\/em> cultivation experiments in Auk\u0161tumala peatbog a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"312\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/aukstumala.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/aukstumala.jpg 312w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/aukstumala-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/aukstumala-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/11\/aukstumala-250x250.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the 2 ha site in Auk\u0161tumala peatland is divided into two parts irrigated by ditches installed every 10 meters. Water supply is ensured by two artificial water reservoirs for storing of rain and snow melt water. Automatic electric pumps provide water from the reservoirs to <em>Sphagnum<\/em> fields to ensure constant water level, which should be close to the peat surface. During the first day, <em>Sphagnum<\/em> mosses were collected by hand from old peat excavation pits, which had been re-grown by <em>Sphagnum<\/em>, as well as damaged fields, where peat extraction will take place. Spreading of mosses was performed during the second day both manually and by using slightly modified one-disc fertilizer spreader. Attached to the mini-tractor and serviced by two people, it spread mosses corresponding to the spreading speed of 5\u20136 people. Due to high winds during the spreading, it was impossible to mulch <em>Sphagnum<\/em> by straw immediately in all area. Instead <em>Sphagnum<\/em> and mulch were pressed by wide wheel tractor. Some days later, all Sphagnum farming field was covered by straw for improving favourable microclimate (higher relative humidity, more stable temperatures) for <em>Sphagnum<\/em> growing.
