Large-scale nature management actions started\nin August in the Amalva peatland site (Southern Lithuania). In order to improve\nthe habitat status, tree cuttings in 200 ha area will be performed. The removal\nof tree biomass will be followed by dam construction and further improvement of\nAmalva raised bog, which is part of huge protected mire complex \u2013 \u017duvintas biosphere\nreserve. Before the large-scale reclamation actions which were implemented\nduring the 1970\u2019s, the southern part of Amalavas raised bog was mainly\ncharacterized by open raised bog habitats. Currently the site is mostly\novergrown by birch and willow trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIncrement\nof tree growth indicates the degradation of raised bog habitats and negative\nchanges in hydrological conditions (i.e. lower water levels). Trees evaporate\nadditional water amounts in the bogs; due to this water loss, mineralization\nprocesses accelerate. Therefore, tree clearing improves hydrological\nconditions, by reducing the loss of water from tree evaporation and contributes\nto the improvement of raised bogs habitats. Additionally, these actions create\nhabitats for rare bird species.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These actions will be implemented based on a cooperation agreement between Lithuanian Fund for Nature, Directorate of \u017duvintas Biosphere Reserve and State Forestry Enterprise. The work is supervised by the Directorate of \u017duvintas Biosphere Reserve, which is responsible for coordinating the implementation of nature management measures. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
