NABU in cooperation with the Barnim District Administration is hosting the LIFE Peat Restore photo exhibition: \u2018Restoring Peatlands for Climate\u2019. The exhibition highlights the beauty of the northern European peatlands and presents their biodiversity and ecosystem functions, as well as to the restoration works by the LIFE Peat Restore project, extending over five countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone\nis welcome to attend the opening of the exhibition in Eberswalde! We hope to\nsee you there on October 21, 2019 at the Paul-Wunderlich-Haus (Am Markt 1). At\n17:00 in the plenary hall there will be presentations from keynote speakers\nabout the important role of peatland restoration for climate mitigation. Also,\nfood and drinks will be served for you to enjoy the stunning photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo exhibition is\nopen to public until October 30th<\/sup> during the opening hours of the public\nentrance area of Paul-Wunderlich-Haus (on working days from 6:00 to 20:00,\nSaturday 6:00 to 16:00, Sunday closed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Peatlands are unique wetland\necosystems that play an important role in nature and our lives. They regulate\ncycling of water and nutrients, provide irreplaceable habitats for many\nspecies, accumulate huge amounts of carbon and regulate climate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most peatlands in Europe have experienced\nhuman-caused modifications. Many peatlands are lost forever. Due to drainage\nand peat extraction which have devastated large areas of pristine ecosystems,\nmany of them have turned from natural carbon sinks into sources of carbon emission.\nDrained peatlands release carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, so called\ngreenhouse gases, which, along with other human-caused emissions, also cause\nglobal warming.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mitigate the drainage effects and reduce release\nof greenhouse gases, LIFE Peat Restore project is restoring peatlands in five\ncountries \u2013 Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany. This exhibition\nintroduces you to our restoration sites, peatland ecosystem functions,\nbiodiversity, beauty, research, management and other aspects.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
