Vegetation and hydrological monitoring has been\nestablished on all project sites, including the instalment of automatic water\nloggers and wells to measure water levels on monitoring plots. <\/p>\n<div \/>\n\n\n\n<p>The data from monitoring is a key\ncomponent for the calculations of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as\nthe global warming potential (GWP), using the GEST approach (for more detailed\nexplanation of the GEST technique: <a href=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/greenhouse-gas-monitoring-stations-installed-project-areas-latvia\/\">https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/greenhouse-gas-monitoring-stations-installed-project-areas-latvia\/<\/a>).\nIn addition to the GEST estimations, LIFE Peat Restore began the direct GHG\nmeasurements in 2018, which uses closed transparent and non-transparent\nchambers (see previous link).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LIFE Peat Restore\npartners have spent most of the summer of 2017 and 2018 surveying and mapping\nvegetation forms on the field. As a result, GEST types have been identified\nalong with the creation of GEST maps for all of the project sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8805.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1982\" srcset=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8805.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8805-417x556.jpg 417w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8805-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on the\nhard work of the partners during the vegetation periods, key beneficiaries of\nLIFE Peat Restore &#8211; University of Latvia, NABU, Tallinn University, Lithuanian\nFund for Nature (LFN) and Klub Przyrodnik\u00f3w &#8211; met in Vilnius from October 22 to\n26, 2018. The meeting was kindly hosted by LFN. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were lively\ndiscussions throughout the week. Significant time was dedicated to the GEST\ntypes identified in each site, whereby each partner presented the results of\ntheir efforts over the summer with a summary of the GEST types and initial\ncalculations of GHG emissions based on the GEST-catalogue. Particular attention\nwas given to carbon sequestration from trees and forests, as the implications\nfor calculations are considerable. Addressing this issue is important to avoid\nsignificant gaps or variations on the emissions data obtained. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8775.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1983\" srcset=\"https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8775.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8775-417x556.jpg 417w, https:\/\/life-peat-restore.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/01\/img-8775-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting was\ncrucial to reach a common understanding of the parameters for calculating the\nGHG flux for each site. Based on the data\nobtained, the balance for all sites will be calculated considering different scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A business as\nusual scenario, whereby current degraded peatlands are not restored. In this\ncase, emissions will likely remain relatively constant on the time period of 30\nto 50 years. A restoration scenario, whereby restoration measures are actually\nimplemented. Thus, it is expected that current emissions from the project sites\nwill likely reduce on the time period of 30 to 50 years, as a result of the\nrestoration measures. LIFE Peat Restore is presently working on finalising the\ncalculations for the first GHG balance scenarios for each project site.
